Today, Skardu is home to several national parks, including the prestigious Narsok National Park.

Satpara Dam project

The US Government is investing $26 million in the completion of the Satpara Multipurpose Dam Project in the skardu Valley, Pakistan. The dam will produce 17.7 megawatts of power for almost 30,000 households and alleviate load shedding in the region. The dam will also irrigate more than 15,000 acres of land and provide 3.1 million acre-feet of water per day, increasing the agricultural output by four times. The project is expected to bring about $6 million in economic benefits to the skardu Valley.

The skardu Valley receives around two-thirds of its annual precipitation during the winter months, with only 18% falling during the monsoon season. The watershed upstream of the dam, the Burgay watershed, distributes water to communities according to historically agreed distribution patterns. However, the seasonal availability of water varies greatly. The study evaluated how much agricultural activity depends on snowmelt and glaciers and its implications for the livelihood of the local community.

The dam's construction is a crucial part of Pakistan's infrastructure, providing drinking, irrigation, and snowmelt for thousands of families. It will take around one hour to reach the top of Satpara Reservoir. The project will also provide electricity for over five thousand households in South Waziristan. The dam will also help the region's infrastructure to deal with natural disasters. It will also provide jobs for local people.
